I am contacting you today in relation to a Public Meeting I will be hosting in my constituency, on Friday the 29th of April from 13:00 â 15:00 in the Ormond Hotel, Kilkenny. The focus of this event will be around the challenges facing modern day sportspeople, with a particular focus on amateur sportspeople.
I am delighted to invite you to join us in Kilkenny for this event, and would be most grateful if you would extend this invitation to your club members, as the event will focus on the issues facing amateur sportspeople in Ireland today. We wish to address these issues, and open a discussion â I am keen to get your views, as this will help us to set the right sport policy at EU-level.
I will be moderating the event myself, and we have confirmed the following speakers to join our discussion :
Mr Brian Cody â the current Kilkenny senior hurling manager and one of the most successful and talented coaches within the GAA, who among his many achievements can boast to having led Kilkenny to eleven All-Ireland titles.
Ms Valerie Mulcahy â a hugely successful Gaelic footballer, who has won ten All-Ireland football titleswith the Cork Ladies Football team, and whose glittering career in amateur sport includes five All-Ireland titles in a row. (TBC)
A member of Cabinet Tibor Navarcsics, the Commissioner for Education, Culture, Youth and Sport. The cabinet is involved in working to promote, and support, amateur sport across the European Union.
Mr Steven Colvert âan Irish 100m sprinter who had high hopes for Olympic qualification, but unfortunately failed a drug test and has been banned from competing for two years.
This public meeting is sure to bring a compelling discussion on the state of amateur sport in Ireland today and the issues facing its vast membership, and I hope it is of interest to you and your club. It will be a great opportunity for you and your members to have your voice heard and to network with key decision makers. I would be delighted to see you there.
